[Press release] Appointing Dr. Seo Hong-kwan as the new president of the National Cancer Center

The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 31st that it has appointed Suh Hong-kwan, 62, a family medicine doctor at the center, as the new president of the National Cancer Center. His term will be three years from January 1 next year.



Suh graduated from Seoul National University Medical School and received master´s and doctorate degrees from the same school´s graduate school. When the National Cancer Center was established in 2003, he participated as an initial member and served as the head of the National Cancer Management Business Headquarters and the head of the anti-smoking support center.



Suh has been director of the Korea Non-smoking Council for 10 years and supported the government´s increase in cigarette taxes, the introduction of warning pictures for cigarette prices, and the designation of restaurants as completely non-smoking areas.

As the first head of the National Cancer Management Business Division, he also established a new department of carcinogen management and cancer monitoring investigation, issued recommendations for seven major cancer screening, and published guidelines for cancer survivors.
