Research Interests (Please place in paragraph form)
Dr. Gwak is a neurosurgeon, whose expertise is treating brain tumors. He is a board member of both Korean Brain Tumor Society and Korean Society of Neuro-Oncology. Clinically, he has developed his career treating malignant brain tumors including gliomas and brain metastases. He is naturally involved in both radiation therapy and chemotherapy, which are main treatment methods for cancer therapy.
In clinical research work, he analyzed factors for radiation response, risk for radiation necrosis, chemotherapy for gliomas and in vitro chemo-sensitivity, and so on. His academic interests in cancer research lead him to radiation biology, cell biology, and mechanism of chemo-/ radio-resistance of cancer cell. His research work has been continued as post-doctoral fellowship in M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. His basic research was focused on action of di-platinum compounds, differentcell cycle arrest/ cell death pathway according to the condition, and autophagy after radiation.
His clinical works are continued as multi-center, retrospective/ prospective study under the name of Korean Society of Neuro-Oncology (KNOG-1201, 1202 and 1204) and he takes part as secretary general or as subPI. From 2009, he has devoted himself to develop treatment methods for leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metastasis of cancer). He has performed a pilot, phase 1 and phase 2 study of ventriculo-lumbar perfusion chemotherapy as PI. Recently, his translational research work is extended to find a biological/ phramocodynamic markers for leptomeningeal carcinomatosis in patient’s CSF.
