Fundamental Courses
  • Master’s Courses
    - Principles of Epidemiology
    This course introduces the basic principles and methods of epidemiology as applied to public health problems. The focus of this course is on epidemiologic measures and study designs.
    Topics covered in this course include disease transmission, morbidity and mortality, surveillance, screening, descriptive and analytic study designs, bias, measures of association, causation, and ethical and professional issues in epidemiology.

    - Cancer Risk Appraisal and Prevention
    This course summarizes the basic principles and applications for cancer prevention regarding the major cancer causes identified. It highlights the way of cancer risk appraisal and preventive measures which could reduce the burden of cancer. Furthermore, it also suggests opportunities to share the global experiences on cancer prevention and intervention.

    - Introduction to Cancer Biology
    This course is mainly for students at the Department of Cancer Control and Population Health and is aimed to acquire basic knowledge of cancer, so that they can apply biological and clinical aspects when working on cancer statistics and epidemiology.

    - Nutritional Epidemiology
    This course is to cover the basic concepts of nutritional and dietary factors which affect chronic diseases. Students will be able to conduct basic analyses using dietary data and association studies for diseases, implement nutritional education program and intervention, and interpret findings from both statistical and biological perspectives.

    - Nutrition and Cancer
    The goals of this course are to explore concepts in research on nutrition and cancer and their applications and to provide skills for understanding and critically evaluating the epidemiologic literature in this area. Students will acquire knowledge regarding what is currently known about the relationships between various dietary factors and cancer.
  • Doctoral Courses
    - Molecular and Cellular Approaches to Human Cancer
    This course is aimed to provide basic knowledge of cancer, especially focusing on molecular and cellular biology. So, students will learn basic mechanism at genetic, molecular, and cellular levels, which will lay the foundation for further understanding clinical and epidemiological aspects in other courses.

    - Systems Epidemiology
    The course aims to teach an epidemiologic approach to risk identification that includes systems-level (e.g., omics) exposure measurements at multiple levels (sociodemographic, clinical, biological, etc), network analyses of inter-relationships among risk factors, and computational simulation of risk scenarios in parallel to data-driven biostatistical risk modeling. This course also helps students understand that systems epidemiology should be seen as a supplemental approach that has advantages that conventional epidemiology studies lack.

    - Nutrition and Metabolism
    This course will provide knowledge and understanding for students to be able to explain current research on molecular mechanisms of nutritional factors and the role of dietary components for the development of a disease. Students will be able to make a scientific discussion of state-of-the art research on molecular nutrition that mediates the effects of dietary factors in the development of disease and recent breakthroughs in metabolic diseases.

    - Risk Interaction in Cancer Causing
    This is an advanced course to make students understand interaction effects of cancer risks in development of cancer regarding the study design adopted, statistical modeling applied, and epidemiological implications expected. It also focuses on practical perspectives such as statistical methods for measuring and interpreting interaction effects, practice of dealing interaction, and clinical and political application.

    - Social and Behavioral Sciences
    This course is designed to understand basic theory, various models, and practical values of social and behavioral science and to facilitate the ability to conduct social and behavioral research in health sciences. Furthermore, it provides chance to learn how to the put theory and practice together for field application in the area of cancer research.
